The Adventurous Journey of a Sandwich Through the Digestive System
Meet Sammy, the Sandwich. Today, Sammy's journey begins in a mouth. Here, the teeth break Sammy into smaller pieces while the saliva softens him, starting the digestion process. He then slides down a long tube called the esophagus, on his way to the stomach. In the stomach, gastric juices and strong muscular contractions turn Sammy into a semi-liquid form. From there, he travels into the small intestine where nutrients are absorbed from him into the bloodstream. Sammy's journey continues as what's left of him enters the large intestine. Here, water and electrolytes are absorbed from him, turning him into a solid waste. Finally, Sammy's adventure ends as he exits the body. What a journey for Sammy, and what an amazing job by the digestive system!
