The Story of Veterans Day
Every year on November 11th, Americans celebrate a special day called Veterans Day. But do you know why? During World War I, fighting ceased on the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month in 1918. That moment marked the end of the war and is the reason we celebrate Veterans Day on November 11th. This day is to honor all veterans who served in the U.S. military.
Unlike Memorial Day, which honors those who died while serving, Veterans Day celebrates all veterans, both living and deceased, who have served our country in war or peace.
In America, we have five branches of the military: the Army, Navy, Marine Corps, Air Force, and Coast Guard. Each of these brave teams plays a different role in protecting our country.
On Veterans Day, we show our gratitude to these heroes. You might see people participating in parades or ceremonies. As students, you can also show respect by thanking a veteran for their service or writing them a letter. Remember, it's a day to celebrate and say thank you to all our brave veterans.
