Once upon a time in the ordinary world, there existed an extraordinary spectacle known as the Cirque Du Freak, a freak show with performers of supernatural abilities. Darren, an average school boy, had his life turned upside down when he stole a deadly spider from one of the performers, Mr. Crepsley, who happened to be a vampire. After a series of tragic events, Darren was forced to become a half-vampire to save his best friend's life. Now a part of the Cirque Du Freak, Darren had to grapple with his new identity, struggling between the human world he once belonged to and the dark underworld he was now a part of. The series presents a vivid array of characters, each unique in their own way. There's Evra, the snake-boy; Truska, the bearded lady; Murlough, a vampaneze; and Harkat, a creature brought back from the dead, amongst many others. Each character's uniqueness is celebrated, teaching the readers to respect and accept differences. In the heart of the series lays Darren's moral dilemmas and his continuous struggle to retain his humanity. It's a fascinating exploration of what it means to be human and the sacrifices one must make for friendship.
