Moon's Game of Hide and Seek: Understanding Moon Phases
The moon loves playing hide and seek with us. Just like the way we hide behind trees and peek out, the moon hides and peeks out from behind the Earth. This game results in the moon changing its shape every night. But is the moon really changing its shape? No, it's just that we're seeing different amounts of the moon lit by the sun as it orbits around the Earth. This game has eight main steps or phases - New Moon, Waxing Crescent, First Quarter, Waxing Gibbous, Full Moon, Waning Gibbous, Last Quarter, and Waning Crescent. Every night, as the moon moves in its orbit, we see a little more or a little less of the moon. But why does the moon play this game? It's all because of the sun. The sun loves to shine its light on the moon. But as the moon orbits around us, different parts of it are lit up, so we see different shapes. This has an effect on our planet too! When the moon is full, it can make the tides in the sea higher than usual. So, the moon's game of hide and seek affects not just the sky but the sea too!
