The Spooky Evolution of Halloween
Did you know that Halloween wasn't always about costumes, candies, and pumpkins? It actually began as a Celtic festival called Samhain, where people would light bonfires and wear costumes to ward off ghosts. When the Romans conquered the Celts, they fused Samhain with their own festivals. Halloween was brought to America by immigrants, where it slowly morphed into a community-centered holiday. The tradition of trick-or-treating began in the 20th century, as an inexpensive way for the community to share the Halloween celebration. Today, Halloween is celebrated differently around the world. In Mexico, they have 'Dia de Los Muertos', or Day of the Dead, which is a three-day celebration in memory of deceased loved ones. In Ireland, where Halloween originated, they still hold bonfires as in the days of Samhain. These traditions and history bring us the fun-filled Halloween we know today. So as you carve your pumpkin and plan your costume, remember the rich history that makes Halloween so spooktacular!
