Have you ever looked up at the night sky and noticed the different shapes of the moon? Believe it or not, the moon isn't changing its shape. It's actually going through its phases! There are eight main phases: the new moon, waxing crescent, first quarter, waxing gibbous, full moon, waning gibbous, last quarter, and waning crescent. These phases happen because the moon orbits around the Earth, and depending on where it is in that orbit, we see more or less of the moon's lit portion. Did you know that we always see the same side of the moon from Earth, no matter what phase it's in?
