Feudalism and the Church: The Medieval Government
During the Middle Ages, the government was structured around a system called feudalism. The King was at the top followed by nobles, knights, and peasants. The King granted lands to nobles, who in return, promised their loyalty and military service. The nobles then allowed peasants, known as serfs, to live on their lands and work for them.
The Church also played a significant role. It held vast wealth and power, and even had its own laws and courts. Bishops and abbots often held the same rank as nobles and had a significant say in governance.
Interestingly, this system is very different from today's democratic government where power is held by the people and leaders are elected. The medieval government was based on a hierarchy of power and wealth, with little room for social mobility. Understanding the past helps us appreciate the freedoms and rights we have today.
