One of the important tasks for fifth-grade readers is to learn how to dissect informational texts. This means having the ability to explain how an author supports his or her main ideas with specific reasons or evidence. Likewise, readers at this level should have sufficient reading comprehension skills that allow them to read multiple sources on the same topic and summarize those sources in their own words. Students can use the following strategies to develop these skills.
Being able to articulate in verbal form what was just read will help the retention of information and is an excellent practice for identifying key ideas and supporting details. Summaries needn’t be expansive, either. Begin by having the reader summarize one or two paragraphs to build skills and confidence, then work up to entire sections of text.
Fact or opinion is a reading comprehension game that gets kids involved in reading multiple sources and comparing them. Provide the reader with a fact-based news article and an op-ed article, and ask them to read both. As they read, children should underline or highlight passages that they think are facts or opinions. Then, discuss the differences in both what was said and how it was said. This facilitates higher-order thinking skills and improves students’ ability to summarize readings in their own words.
Another way you can help fifth graders improve their ability to dissect texts is to ask them to consider the event they’ve read about from another viewpoint. For example, if the child is learning about the first Thanksgiving in the New World, the text likely recalls that event from the point of view of the European settlers. Having the child consider what it might’ve been like from the perspective of the Native Americans enables them to better understand the event they’re studying while also helping them develop the tools needed to remember key details and recall them in their own words.
